The pet dental cleaning (the removal of calculus and plaque) done by unlicensed persons without supervision by a veterinarian is illegal in Oregon, and some claims made by people doing the dental cleaning are deceptive. It is fraudulent to claim that the cleaning done by an unsupervised lay person is the same as professional dental cleaning at a veterinary practice. While cleaning the surface of the teeth may improve appearance and sometimes helps to improve the animal's breath, underlying problems will be masked. It is possible to damage the enamel surface of the teeth and accelerate the build up of plaque and tartar. In general, the superficial cleaning causes a false sense of the pet's health, and the consumer does not see the need for regular dental examination by a veterinarian. It takes years for the neglect of teeth and gums to surface, and by the time the consumer sees the effect of the neglect it is too late.
California has cracked down on these businesses in their state. Ask yourself this, Would you go to an unsupervised, untrained, and unlicensed person for your own, or your children's, dental care?
